If you're thinking of or currently working with a ghostwriter, here are some things to consider and discuss with your writer for best results. Communication is a two-way street and the better you can communicate with your writer (and vice-versa), the better the results. Part 1: Meeting Your Expectations * Confidentiality: It must be clear that all the projects you pass on are kept in confidence. The ghostwriter must not share or even use any information learned from your project. It may be necessary to have your ghostwriter sign an agreement of non-disclosure. * Turnaround Time: Ensure that you provide an expected turnaround time. Sometimes delays are encountered, but by providing a deadline, it ensures open communication and the ability to meet your needs more effectively. * File Format: Let your ghostwriter know if your require specific file formats (For example .doc or text, any font type or style) * U.S. or British English: There is a difference in the spelling of U.S. English and British English words. Make sure to advise your ghostwriter of which spelling is needed for your particular project. * Clarify Payment Expectations: Familiarize yourself with how your ghostwriter wants to receive payment. Sometimes partial payment is necessary before your ghostwriter starts working on your project. Once the project is completed, the balance is due and once paid for you can start using the completed work. Part 2: Writing Process * Writing Voice and Style: Each person has their own specific voice. If you want your ghostwriter to write like you, make sure to supply her with various samples of your work so that she can have a better understanding of what you expect of her. * Give them Your Angle: Each person has their own differing opinion about certain things. If you wish your ghostwriter to take the same stance as you regarding a specific topic, make sure to let them know. * Sentence and Paragraph Format: If you are working with a ghostwriter who is used to print writing, you need to familiarize them with online writing because there is a unique requirement with online writing. For instance, our eyes get tired quickly online, so we want to keep our paragraphs and sentences to the minimum. Ideally online, paragraphs should be only 3-5 sentences. Keep sentences simple; relate only one idea at a time. Use bullet points as they help make content easier to understand. * Let them know what you want covered: If you want an article written about a specific topic that you are knowledgeable about, do not assume that your ghostwriter knows which points you want discussed in that article. Provide a list of points that you want included in the content. It doesn't take a lot of time to put that list together and you will end up with a finished product that is more acceptable. * Plagiarism and Rewriting Content: Professional ghostwriters know that copying another author's work is unacceptable. However, if you are training a new writer, you must be sure to tell them of that. Cutting and pasting other articles or sentences and rewriting some of them is also not acceptable. Although writers can do some research and read other articles to learn about specific topics, the final written article must be 100% their own original work. Many people use special software to rewrite article. Simply rewriting an article does not make it an original article. * Should hyperlinks be used? When an article has links to outside websites, readers tend to be distracted. Make sure to let your ghostwriter know if you want her to include links to outside resources in your article. Although content is often times designed to promote a certain product, business or website, you also do not want to side track your readers with hyperlinks. * Do you want your content to be evergreen? Most projects passed on to ghostwriters require content to be evergreen. Your ghostwriter may already be aware of this but it is smart to remind them about it. In some cases, you may wish your article to be timely and pointing out specific events. Whatever content you wish your article to have, whether evergreen or time specific, make sure to be clear with your ghostwriter. * How many edits are included with the project? Will your ghostwriter edit her work for you? Some ghostwriters will include edits and some won't. Know what to expect by asking before your get the project started.
